Refresher on the Lord’s Prayer

Part One:

After this manner…” – The Lord’s Prayer is a template for prayer.

Therefore pray” – A healthy relationship with God requires constant communication with Him.

Part Two:

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name” – Beginning our prayers with thankfulness and praise can help set the tone and perspective for a healthy, heaven focused, and God honoring prayer. “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name,” Psalm 100:4.

Part Three:

Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”  When we think of God’s will, we often think of a path for our life, or a door of opportunity which we hope not to miss.  However, God’s will, as taught in scripture, is for souls to be saved from sin, and once saved to grow, study, pray, evangelize, disciple, etc.  In other words, while we might care about the door of opportunity, or the overall path in our life, God cares far more about the salvation and Spiritual health of the person going through the door or walking down the path.  If we are right with God, then if or when those doors and paths present themselves, we will be ready for them.

Part Four:

Give us this day our daily bread”  God loves us, therefore He expects us to pray for everything we are sincerely worried about, but at the same time, we are also expected to accept any answer He gives (including “no”), as Christ did (cf. Mark 14:36)

Part Five:

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” 1) All humans have a debt of sin and need to be forgiven by salvation through Jesus.  If you have been forgiven, then you have a debt to love God and love others, and to walk in this love.  When we fall short (sin), we need to get our life right with God by asking Him to forgive us and turning away from sin. 2) Ask for forgiveness before you ask for a favor. 3) If God forgives us, then who are we to withhold forgiveness from someone else?  Forgive others.
